Reviews of External Hard Drives

People are quite often looking for reviews of external hard drives. As such we have put together this site to assist people in reviewing the various reviews of external hard drives and to discern for themselves the best drive to select.

Reviews of External Hard Drives – Key Topics

When looking at Reviews of External Hard Drives, it is important that you focus in on several factors usually written into the review:

  • Drive Capacity – This is the factor everyone looks for
  • Drive Speed – This can influence the speed at which the data is written or read
  • Drive Interface – Different interfaces can have impact on speed as well as the connectivity to your computer
  • the Pros and Cons – These are usually opinions about the product and you can glean a lot of valuable information about that drive and will it work for your application
  • Technical Specs – Watch this area for physical size, specifics about the drive, backup software, and other factors
  • the Bottom Line – This is usually a summary that will tell you if the drive is one that you should consider

The key thing when reading these reviews is that you look for two things.  First you want to look for a drive that meets your criteria.  In fact, it is often good to take a review and build your own set of criteria.  For example looking at external hard drives, we may want to consider the format of the drive (Mac or PC), the capacity, the interface, the weight and personal preferences such as color.  Once you have these factors, you can then match them against the drives being reviewed.

Reviews of External Hard Drives by Manufacturer & other Criteria

Reviews of External Hard DrivesOne type of break out of Reviews of External Hard Drives is to look at the Manufacturer and see what sort of groupings can be gathered, such as in a summary format where you can sort drives by the manufacturer, or by capacity or the like.

We have an external hard drive review comparison where you can sort based on manufacturer, or by several other factors.
When looking for a new External Hard drive, you want to be sure that you are looking at not only the specs of the drive, but you also want to consider any comments, favorable and unfavorable.

Keep in mind that it is very common for people to post favorable comments about products themselves to boost their score, so you want to look at products that have a lot of comments and then weigh the good and the bad yourself.  Often people will post negative comments, but every product has negative comments.  The thing to look at is if you can learn about certain traits of that product and determine if there is a reoccurring issue.  Often the negative complaint is a one time concern.

Reviews of External Hard Drives – Summary

In summary, when you are reading reviews of external hard drives, you want to discern the key factors that will help you make a decision and not be swayed because the author thinks it is a good drive.   Keep in mind that personal preferences such as color or size may not always be the best choice.  Also look at the reviews to see if people have had long term success with the drive.   We wish you luck as you shop for External hard drives.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive Review

Review of the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive

Pros – Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive:

  • Quiet portable hard drive
  • Draws power from USB
  • USB 2.0 plug-and-play drive
  • Easy-to-use preloaded backup and encryption software
  • Upgradable to USB 3.0, FireWire 800 or eSATA or access content over the network and on TV

Cons – Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive:

  • Only comes in Black
  • Glossy surface shows fingerprints
  • A little larger than its competitors
  • Only a 5400 RPM drive

//

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive – The Bottom Line:

The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive is a great drive for the money.  The 1 terabyte storage capacity will provide you with enough room to store more than enough photos and digital music. It is very portable and and has a great design.

Although larger than the Western Digital Passport, this drive is comparable in terms of size and speed. The 5400 RPM speed is a bit of a disappointment as we would have liked to have seen 7200 RPMs, but it does keep the drive cooler. The transfer speed is average on USB 2.0. Again that is likely a reflection of the drive speed. It may be faster with the eSATA or Firewire.

On Amazon.com there have been a number of reports of drive failures. This is not uncommon, but this particular drive seemed to have quite a few. If a drive is going to fail, it should be within the first month of normal use. Which is fine as you are still under warranty. Just be sure that you have other copies of your data. Never have your data only in one place. This is true even if the drive does not fail. You could lose the drive or have it stolen, so always make redundant backups.

Overall, this is a good drive with a lot of storage. It will serve you well and provide a lot of capacity.

Iomega eGo Mac Edition 320 GB Portable External Hard Drive Review

Review of the Iomega eGo Mac Edition 320 GB Portable External Hard Drive

Pros – Iomega eGo Mac Edition 320 GB Portable External Hard Drive:

  • Ruggedized – can absorb shocks well
  • 3 Year Warranty (with registration)
  • small and sleek
  • no power supply needed
  • Runs with Firewire

Cons – Iomega eGo Mac Edition 320 GB Portable External Hard Drive:

  • Gets too hot with normal use
  • Reports of case becoming detached

//

Iomega eGo Mac Edition 320 GB Portable External Hard Drive – Bottom Line:

This drive is sleek and stylish. It comes in various colors depending upon the size of the hard drive.

People really like the speed of this drive. You can back up your laptop drive in no time! The case being aluminum can be slippery if you are not careful. Additionally people have said that they don’t know when it is powered on or off and there is no control for this. The simple resolution is to simply unplug it from the computer. This will power it off.

The ability to switch between USB and Firewire is a very attractive feature on the Iomega eGo Mac Edition 320 GB Portable External Hard Drive. If you have a fire-wire port, this is the way to go as it is much faster than USB. If you own a Mac Air, be careful as you may not have the fire-wire port to accommodate this drive.

There have been reports of the case becoming detached. Not everyone suffers this, so we suspect that these are isolated problems.

With this drive you get a great aluminum design and multiple connections too! With one FireWire 800 port, one FireWire 400 port, and one USB 2.0 port, the Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive offers triple interface versatility for Mac users and a stylish design. These drives are formatted HFS+ for a great out-of-box experience. Plus, the Iomega Drop Guard feature protects the drive when dropped up to 51″ (40% above the industry average!). EMC Retrospect, QuikProtect, and MozyHome Online backup software is included with purchase. Available in Ruby Red, Alpine White and Midnight Blue in up to 500GB capacity (capacities vary per color).

In summary, this is a great little drive for backing up your Mac. It is sleek, quick, quiet, and attractive. Essentially everything you want in a portable hard drive. You are likely to love the Iomega eGo Mac Edition 320 GB Portable External Hard Drive and forget the days before you had it.

Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive Review

Review of the Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros – Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive:

  • Very Quiet external hard drive
  • very fast
  • small and sleek
  • no power supply needed
  • only requires use of one usb port

Cons – Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive:

  • Lays horizontal on a flat surface, not designed for vertical positioning

//

Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive – Bottom Line:

This is a hassle free drive and is not bundled with any of the extra software which is exactly what I wanted to see. You simply plug it in and it works. It can easily be formatted to work with macs as well. I’ve been using WD hard drives for years and I own several models of the “essential” and “passport” editions. They are very reliable.

The two features that seem to excite most people about the Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive are the facts that it is both very quiet and very fast. People have reported very high transfer rates (Reads at 30MB/s and writes at about 24MB/s).

Another factor going in favor of this drive is that it is relatively inexpensive for the amount of storage you get. With a street price of about $99, this is a great price for 2 Terabytes of data space.

Overall this hard drive seems to be a winner with few cons to discourage people.

//

Seagate Expansion 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive Bottom Line:

The Seagate Expansion 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive has many great features.  The 1/2 a terabyte storage capacity will provide you with enough room to store more than 160,000 photos, or more than 12,000 hours of digital music.

It has great support for both the PC and the Macintosh. The drag and drop functionality is one of the greatest aspects of this drive. No software to mess with. Just use it.

The Seagate Expansion 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive has fast file transfer, not as much junk software as in other devices. The packaging was is a little difficult to open. Overall, the drive was quiet and worked on the power of the usb with no issues. The device itself is larger than the WD passport but smaller than most devices of its capacity. The small form factor is nice, but it really should have a case to go with it, in the event that you may drop it.

One of the most noteable features is that it gets its power from USB cable. This is nice as you do not need a seperate power supply cable or even a wall-jack to use it.

In summary, this is a small, efficient, quiet, and very usable portable hard drive that should serve you well.
